Victor Wembanyama Gets Off To A Rough Start In His Summer League Debut
Is the number one overall pick ever going to live up to the monumental hype?
Leading up to the 2023 NBA Draft, there were incredible amounts of talk about one man and one man only: Victor Wembanyama. The 7 foot 5 Frenchman has been garnering tons of attention for things such as his ability to dunk with ease thanks to his staggering height along with his seemingly generational defensive abilities. When it was announced that the San Antonio Spurs had gotten the first overall pick in the NBA Draft, members of the media and NBA fans alike knew that there was no one better for the Spurs to draft than Wembanyama.
Of course, even the San Antonio Spurs knew that Wemby was the only answer, so that is why he was selected by the Spurs with the first overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, which, at the end of the day, shocked nobody. However, what may be the most shocking about Wembanyama is his summer league debut, which did not go to plan for Wemby whatsoever.
In his summer league debut for San Antonio, Wembanyama scored a measly 9 points and shot 2-of-13 from the field, which is quite unimpressive, especially considering that there was a sold-out crowd in Las Vegas that were all eagerly awaiting the debut of the so-called next big thing in basketball.
In Wemby’s defense, though, he is only 19 years old. Even with all the hype around him, he’s still inexperienced and has a lot to learn about the game before he can reach his potential as a player. There has been off-the-court drama involving Wemby and Britney Spears that might have distracted him more than it should have, but that’s a different story for another day.
So anyways, do you think Wembanyama will succeed and become a star or has his debut in the Summer League shown to the basketball world that he is just another overhyped player that people only like because of his height? Answer in the poll below:
